I’ve been there: contracting under pressure. Big deadlines. High stakes. No margin for error. And when things start to go sideways, who do you turn to?
Not the client, because you’re not really part of the team. Not the agency, even though they’re technically your employer. Usually it’s another contractor, someone who quietly gets it.
I’ve been that contractor. I’ve felt the stress build in the lead-up to a big presentation. I’ve gone home knowing the next day was going to be a challenge. And I’ve found myself wishing there was someone in my corner who actually understood what I was dealing with.
Questions worth asking your agency
- Does your agency know when your big deadline is?
- Do they know when you’re under the pump, or when a tough review is coming up?
- Do they know the critical points that define your time on site?
- And if you told them, would they understand the context?
Most of the time, they don’t. The industry has become transactional: tick the compliance boxes, process the timesheet, move on.
An EAP is the baseline, not the whole answer
A confidential Employee Assistance Program is important, and every contractor should have access to one. But when you’re under pressure at work, you’re often not looking for a hotline. You’re looking for someone who already understands what you’re going through.
That’s why at Talexa we try to do things differently. Our contractors have access to an EAP, and we also want to be present, and more than that, advocates. People who check in when it counts and understand the reality of what contractors are navigating. Because contracts are hard, the work is demanding, and no one should have to go it alone.
